Encouragement of Climb
(ヤマノススメ Yama no Susume, lit. "Recommendation of Mountaineering") is a manga series serialized in Earth Star Entertainment's Comic Earth Star from 2011. It has been adapted into an anime television series, which aired in Japan between January and March 2013 and was simulcasted by Crunchyroll. A second season is scheduled to air from July 2014.
Plot:
Aoi and Hinata are childhood friends. Aoi prefers staying indoors and is afraid of heights, whereas Hinata is outgoing and loves mountaineering. They both decide to climb a mountain, in order to see a sunrise they saw together when they were younger.

Aoi Yukimura (雪村 あおい Yukimura Aoi)
Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi
A high school girl who became afraid of heights after breaking her leg from falling off a playground structure. Thanks to Hinata's influence, however, she soon starts to take an interest in mountain climbing.
Hinata Kuraue (倉上 ひなた Kuraue Hinata)
Voiced by: Kana Asumi
A hyperactive girl who loves mountains. She was friends with Aoi in elementary school before reuniting with her in high school. She has a bad habit of dragging Aoi along with whatever takes her fancy.
Kaede Saitō (斉藤 楓 Saitō Kaede)
Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa
A girl in Aoi's class who loves mountain climbing, making friends with Aoi after they meet in an equipment store.
Kokona Aoba (青羽 ここな Aoba Kokona)
Voiced by: Yui Ogura
A middle school student Aoi and Hinata met and befriended while on a mountain trail.
Hinata's father (ひなたの父 Hinata no Chichi)
Voiced by: Seirō Ogino
Manga:
Yama no Susume began as a manga series written and illustrated by Shiro and published in Earth Star Entertainment's Comic Earth Star magazine. The first chapter appeared in the September 2011 issue of the magazine, released on August 12, 2011. Since then, the series' chapters have been compiled in 5 volumes, published between June 12, 2012, and October 12, 2013.

An anime television series, directed by Yusuke Yamamoto and produced by 8-Bit aired in Japan on Tokyo MX between January 3 and March 21, 2013, and was simulcasted by Crunchyroll. The series ran for a total of 12 5-minute episodes. The opening theme is "Staccato Days" (スタッカート・デイズ?) by Yuka Iguchi and Kana Asumi. A 13th, unaired episode came bundled with the Blu-ray Disc release of the series on May 14, 2013. A second season has been announced and will begin airing in Summer 2014. The second season will have 15-minute episodes, which will run for half a year.
